How to Choose the Right Journal for Your Research Paper
I once spent six weeks reformatting a manuscript for a Q1 cardiology journal. Reference style, figure captions, supplementary file structure, the whole ritual. Four days after submission the handling editor sent back a one-paragraph desk rejection: outside our scope. That paper later landed at a Q2 specialty journal that fit perfectly, and it has been cited more than my last two Q1 papers from the same year. Most guides tell you choosing a journal is "important." Sure. What they don't tell you is the workflow that prevents the six-week mistake. This is that workflow, with the specific numbers I wish someone had handed me my first year.
The cost of choosing wrong is bigger than people admit
Desk-rejection rates at the top journals run 60 to 80 percent. The Lancet rejects around 95 percent of submissions; JAMA sits near 85; Nature is roughly 90. Even the megajournals that accept most methodologically sound work, like PLOS ONE and Scientific Reports, reject about half of what they see, and most of those rejections are pure scope mismatch.
The editor reads the abstract, decides it's not for them, and you've lost a month. Scope mismatch is the single biggest reason papers get rejected without review. Weak data comes second. The two combined account for most desk rejections at the journals I read for.
Step 1: Pull aims-and-scope from five journals before you write a word
Most people get this order wrong. They write the paper, then go shopping for a journal. That's backwards. You'll end up squeezing your work to fit a journal that's almost right.
Try it the other way. Before you start drafting, pick five candidate journals. Open the full aims-and-scope page for each one (not the promotional blurb on the homepage, the long version in the submission guidelines). Read the last three issues. Look for papers similar in scope and method to yours. If you cannot find a single recent paper that resembles what you're about to write, that journal is not your journal, regardless of its impact factor.
Once you've narrowed it to two or three, write the abstract to fit the strongest one. Use their vocabulary. Mirror their framing. Editors notice.
Step 2: Check indexing, but go past "yes or no"
For most institutions, Scopus or Web of Science indexing is the bar. Confirm it. But "indexed yes/no" hides the detail that actually matters for promotion files.
Look it up in a few places. The Journal Citation Reports (JCR) gives you the impact factor and the JIF quartile within each subject category. SCImago shows the SJR score, the H-index, and quartiles by category, free of charge. Scopus Sources gives you CiteScore and its percentile rank, which is often more revealing than the raw number because percentile controls for field. JCR costs your institution money; SCImago is free and good enough for a first pass.
Some institutions only count specific lists. India's UGC-CARE has its own approved-journals list. ERIH PLUS does the same for European humanities and social sciences. Several Chinese universities prefer journals on the CAS partition list. Before you submit, find out which list your tenure committee actually looks at. The answer is often not what the dean publicly says it is.
Step 3: Match quartile to your career stage, not your ego
Most guides tell early-career researchers to chase Q1. I disagree, and I think the data backs me up.
A Q2 paper that gets cited 20 times in three years does more for a tenure file than a Q1 paper that gets cited twice. Lower-tier Q1 journals reject 70 to 80 percent of submissions, and the cycle from submission to final decision often runs eight to twelve months. If you're a postdoc with a three-year contract, that math gets ugly fast.
Q2 specialty journals in your subfield often have higher actual readership among the people who will cite you. The cycle is faster, the rejection rate is lower, and the editor handling your paper actually works in your subfield rather than triaging on title alone.
Save Q1 for the papers that warrant it. The rest of the time, pick the journal where your work will get read and cited. Fellowship committees usually count citations more than they count quartiles.
Step 4: The first-decision-time question almost nobody asks early
Time to first decision varies more than people realize. PLOS ONE takes around 110 days. Scientific Reports averages about 45. Heliyon comes in around 30. IEEE Access typically runs 4 to 6 weeks. eLife often returns an initial editorial decision in 14 days, with longer turnaround if it goes to full review. Nature-family journals average 6 to 10 weeks for first decision. Those figures are roughly current as of 2024 self-reported data, and they shift.
How do you find this for journals not on the list? A few sources help. The journal's own statistics page (publishers like Elsevier, Springer, and Wiley list median times under "About this journal"). SciRev.org, which aggregates self-reported author experiences and tends to be more pessimistic than the journal claims. And a polite email to two or three authors who recently published in your target journal. They will almost always reply within a week and tell you the real number.
Step 5: The APC reality check
Open access costs real money and the spread is enormous. Rough current ranges for article processing charges (APCs):
- PLOS ONE: about $1,805.
- eLife: $2,000.
- MDPI titles: $2,000 to $3,000 (Sensors around $2,800, IJMS around $2,900).
- Frontiers titles: $2,500 to $3,500.
- BMC titles: $2,500 to $3,500.
- Nature Communications: about $6,790.
- Cell Reports: about $5,300.
- Cell itself, if you somehow get in: north of $11,000.
Before you panic at those numbers, check what your institution has already paid for. Many universities have transformative agreements or read-and-publish deals with major publishers (Wiley, Elsevier, Springer Nature, Cambridge, Oxford) that cover or discount APCs for corresponding authors at the institution. Your librarian can tell you in five minutes. The Plan S coalition page lists which funders mandate open access and what counts as compliant. Skip this step and you may submit to a journal you cannot afford.
Step 6: The five-minute predatory check
Predatory journals waste your time and damage your CV. The check is fast.
Run the journal name through Think.Check.Submit. It's a researcher-built checklist that takes about five minutes. For open access titles, confirm membership in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). For paywalled doubt cases, Cabells Predatory Reports lists journals with serious red flags.
Red flags I look for personally, even on journals that pass the lists:
- Editorial board pages that list institutional affiliations but no profile links you can verify.
- No DOI registration. DOIs cost the publisher money, and predatory journals usually skip them.
- A claimed impact factor that does not appear in JCR. The fake ones are often called "Universal Impact Factor" or "Global Impact Factor" or some similar invention.
- Unsolicited email invitations to submit, especially ones that flatter you about a paper "in your area of expertise."
- Submission portals that request the APC before peer review.
The ICMJE recommendations are useful background reading. Any legitimate biomedical journal will state ICMJE conformance somewhere on its site.
Putting it together
