That's the answer if you only have ten seconds. If you have ten minutes, the details matter more than most people realize, especially for tenure files and grant applications. What each database actually does

The JIF for a given year counts citations received in that year to articles published in the previous two years, divided by the number of citable items in those two years. CiteScore, published in Scopus, uses a four-year window. For a given year, it counts citations received in that year and the three preceding years to documents published in the same four-year span, divided by the total count of those documents. The window length is the whole game. JIF moves faster when a single big paper hits, because the two-year window concentrates the impact. CiteScore smooths the curve over four years. Quartile mismatch and why it happens
Both databases assign quartiles (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4) by ranking journals within a subject category. Same journal, same year, different quartiles, because the categories are not the same.
Scopus's All Science Journal Classification (ASJC) sorts journals into 27 main areas and 313 sub-areas. WoS uses around 250 categories. A journal that sits at the top of a smaller Scopus sub-category can be mid-pack in a broader WoS category. A nutrition journal might be Q1 in "Nutrition and Dietetics" (Scopus) but Q2 in the same-named WoS category because the WoS bucket is twice the size.
If your CV lists "Q1 journal," and someone checks the other database, they may see Q2. Best practice: cite the source. "Q1 (Scopus, Nutrition and Dietetics, 2023)." It looks more careful, and it protects you from the inevitable nitpicker on the hiring committee.
Coverage gaps that catch researchers off guard
Scopus tends to be broader. It includes more regional journals, more humanities titles, and a longer list of Latin American and Asian publications. If you publish in Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, or Indonesian regional journals, Scopus probably has them and WoS may not.
WoS is more selective. The SCIE and SSCI core has a higher bar for inclusion, which is part of why some tenure committees prefer it. WoS also has a Conference Proceedings Citation Index that captures top engineering and computer science conferences (IEEE conferences, ACM venues), which Scopus covers more spottily.
Both systems have blind spots in datasets and software releases as citable outputs. If your field is data-heavy, deposit on Zenodo and let citations accumulate there as a parallel record.
