"Indexed in Scopus" is the single phrase that decides whether a paper counts for promotion at most universities outside the US biomedical world, and inside it for a growing share too. Get that part wrong and you have spent six months writing for a CV line that does not exist. The good news is that verifying Scopus indexing is free, fast, and entirely public. The bad news is that most early-career researchers do it the slow way: ask a senior colleague, accept the answer, submit, then discover at acceptance that the journal was discontinued from Scopus eighteen months ago. Look specifically for two things. First, the most recent year of coverage. If the latest year listed is the current year or the year that just ended, the journal is actively indexed. If coverage stops at a year more than 24 months ago, the journal has been discontinued or is at risk. Second, the discontinuation flag. Scopus publishes an annual list of discontinued titles, and any journal on it gets a visible warning on its Sources page.

One quirk: a small number of recently-accepted journals appear on Sources before the first articles are indexed, with coverage marked "from [year]." That is a green light. The opposite — coverage that stops abruptly — is the red flag.

A journal might be Q1 in "Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmaceutics (miscellaneous)" but Q3 in the broader "Pharmacology" category. Both are real. Which one your institution looks at depends on policy and sometimes on the specific reviewer's whim. If you publish in fields with broad and narrow categories, check both before deciding what to claim on your CV.

Step 3: Cross-check with the Scopus title list (Excel export)

The file includes every active title with ISSN, publisher, language, country of publication, subject classification, open access status, and date of acceptance into Scopus.

Two separate files matter most. The "Scopus Sources" list contains active titles. Compare them. If a journal you are considering appears on the discontinued list within the past three years, that is a hard stop.

Step 4: Verify the journal is currently accepting submissions

Indexing tells you nothing about whether the journal is open to new submissions today. Some Scopus indexed journals temporarily close submissions when their queue gets too long (Heliyon has done this), shift to invitation-only for short windows, or sit "paused" while the editorial board reorganises. None of that shows on the Sources page.
